Ring Dog IPA

logo_ring_dogring dog on tapTry the latest in our line of small batch IPAs – Ring Dog IPA. This IPA is not for the weak of heart. It’s a big, bold, in-your-face HOP EXPLOSION. Ring Dog features Santiam hops, a cross between 1/3 German Tettnanger, 1/3 Hallertauer Mittelfrüh, and 1/3 tetrapoild USDA Male. Santiam stays true to its German heritage by exhibiting a lingering spice – not heat, just spice. As Santiam was cultivated in Corvallis, Oregon, we decided to name this IPA after the logging industry. A “ring dog” is a hook attached to a wooden handle that is used to roll logs.

The additions of Cascade and Horizon hops give the beer a bit of a citrus kick, and the Simcoe pushes the pine. You’ll taste plenty of hops but not an overwhelming bitterness. Enjoy the flavor punch without puckering up. I do mean punch – Ring Dog registers 7.3% ABV.

Malt: 2-Row, Crystal-20
Hops: Santiam, Cascade, Horizon, Simcoe
ABV: 7.3%
IBU: ???
SRM: 8

Introducing Drill Bit ESB

Available this afternoon, Drill Bit ESB.

Recognizing the ESB as an under-appreciated style, Gizmo set out to draw positive attention to this classic English-style ale. But we really like hops at Gizmo, so we’ve Americanized the beer a bit with a heavy late hop addition for extra aroma and flavor. The result is a clean, dry bitterness paired with earthy, fruity English hops. Think sipping on tea and oranges in the cool of the morning.

Thanks to homebrewer extraordinaire James Torrible for the recipe.

Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Carapils, Crystal-40, Crystal-60, Victory, Chocolate
Hops: East Kent Goldings, Challenger, Columbus
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 45
SRM: 10

The Wild Wasp

waspGizmo Brew Works will celebrate Independence Day weekend by releasing a truly unique brew. Gizmo partnered with Dr. Anne Madden at to produce a new version of Gizmo’s The Palisade Wasp IPA, one brewed not with the standard California ale yeast but with an entirely new strain never before used in production brewing.

Dr. Madden’s doctoral research at Tufts University focused on the microbes associated with paper wasps. From the body of a paper wasp, she isolated a wild yeast strain that just happened to love maltose. Dr. Madden cultured the new yeast strain and sent it to Gizmo, where we incorporated it into our flagship IPA. This special release of The Palisade Wasp IPA really will be a wasp IPA! Nicknamed the “Wild Wasp” (think of a drunken, scantily clad wasp sloppily tossing back pints…or thimbles), this one-of-a-kind brew maintains the crisp sting associated with our IPA but is enhanced by the orangey sour tang imparted by the wild wasp yeast.

The “Wild Wasp” will be available for a limited run at Gizmo’s taproom beginning July 5th. Select draft accounts in the area will also carry our new brew.
